Over time, I’ve realized that not every problem needs to be my problem. The simple phrase “Not my circus, not my monkey” (It’s a Polish idiom „Nie mój cyrk, nie moje małpy.”) has become more than a witty expression for me — it’s evolved into a mindset that protects my energy, sharpens my focus, and helps me lead with calm clarity.
clarity through boundaries
In the past when I tried to solve everything, I end up solving nothing well. I used to feel compelled to jump into every issue — even those beyond my control or responsibility. Now, by consciously choosing what truly deserves my attention, I’ve learned to set healthier emotional and mental boundaries.
This doesn’t mean indifference; it means strategic focus. By identifying what’s mine to fix versus what’s simply noise, I’ve regained clarity and purpose in how I approach challenges.
reducing the surface area
In any fast-paced environment — personal or professional — the more problems you let stick to you, the more your surface area of stress expands. Adopting this mindset has helped me intentionally reduce that surface area. I engage deeply where I can create impact, and I detach gracefully from situations where I can’t.
This focus doesn’t just save time; it preserves mental bandwidth for meaningful work.
the physiological calm
Interestingly, this mindset shift has even shown up in my health metrics. My blood pressure now hovers around 117/76 — a physical reflection of internal calm. By not internalizing every storm around me, my body has stopped reacting to constant external pressure. The line between emotional balance and physiological health has never felt clearer.
focus over frenzy
Everything cannot be my circus — because if everything is, then nothing truly gets the attention it deserves.
Choosing where to invest my focus is not selfish; it’s sustainable. It’s how I ensure that when I do step into the arena, I’m present, and effective.
